A SERIOUS MISHAP TO HON. E. MITCHELSON.
- SEVERE INJURIES.
FRIGHTENED HORSE 4 ENGINE. (By Tolezraph.—Spcclal Correspondent.) Auckland, February IC, Tho Hon. E. Mitchelson was the victim of an unfortunate and severe accident at about 3,15 p.m. on Saturday. Ho had been attending tho Waitcmata show, near tho extreme end of tho Takapuna tramline, and was awaibnj u steam tramcar from town, being at the time engaged in consultation with Mr. H. H. Adams. Ho was aho holding tho hand of a boy named Ralph Wilson, aged about 14, who recently came from Northern Wairoa to attend the Auckland Grammar School. The latter, who resides at Northcote, had been to the show with Mr. Mitchelson.
■ As tho tramcar was approaching, a whistle from tho engine startled a loose draught' horse which had been grazing on the side of the road, and the animal, galloping along at the side of the engine, suddenly swerved across the lino in front of tho car. It dashed straight towards Messrs. Mitchelson and Adams, with such pace as to cause both, to jump aside. Mr. Adams side-stepped away from the tramline, but tho Hon. Mr. Mitchelson stepped the other way, and collided with the engine just-as it was stopping. At the sarno time the boy Wilson was knockcd down by the horse. Mr. Mitchelson was thrown violently on to the roadway on his left side ( and tho many people who rushed to his aid at onco realised that ha was Ijadly hurt. Both he and the injured boy (tho' latter being more shaken than hurt) wore taken to tho residence of Mr. H. H. Adams, near by, and Dr. Fullerton, who happened to bo on the show, ground, gavo his attention. The attendance' of Dr. Fairclough was also quickly secured from Takapuna, and every possible attention was rendered. The doctors found .that Mr. Mitchelson'a left kg was broken near the ankle, that a email bone in bis left wrist was'fractured, and that there was a severe cut abovo tho right eye, and also minor facial abrasions. No internal injury, however, had been sustained. Tho boy had fortunately ©soaped, beyond sustaining a severe shock, and some scratches on the knees. •
Mr. Mitchclson only recently recovered from a serious illness, and was to have gone homb for an extended trip in a few weeks' time.
A third bystander, a married woman, also suffered slightly as tho result of the accident. ~Slie was knocked down by the bolting horse almost at the instant when the boy was thrown down. Shock was the, principal trouble in her ciise. She' was able to leavo for her home by an early tramcar.
