PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT.
ANNUAL OUTING.- , A very successful' function, at Hay's Bay yesterday, was tho annual picnio of the headquarters staff of .the Publio Works Department. Officers of .the Department, with their wives'and children, to the total number of about 100, crossed tho bay in tho morning on tho Cobar. Most of them returned at i.20 by tho Duchess, and tho remainder in the eatno steamer at G p.m. Tho amusements of the day included a small Bports programino and a cricket match. Tho latter gave rise to a comical situation. As it was found inconvenient to pit ono - section of tho Department against another, sides were picked on tho ground by Mr. C. E. Bennett and Mr. W. M'Nanmra. When tho match was over ft difficulty appeared which mado it impossible to assign tho victory. Mr. M'Namora's team, which had batted first, had neglected to keep a score. An estimate, Iry the members of the eleven, of tho runs they had made, did not prove acceptable to their opponents, and in the' end tho issue of the match was.left hanging in , doubt. Tho picnickers were photographed before tboy left for homo, which they did in excellent spirits, - and well pleased with their day's enjoyment. • To-day the District Office staff and Workshops staff of the Public Works Department will hold their annual picnio at Trentham. It id anticipated that tho attendance will bo nt least as largo as at yesterday's function if tho weather holds g mV. H. J. H. Blow (Under-Secretary for Publio Works) attended tho headquarters staff picnic, and will also attond tho Workshops picnio to-day.
