MEAT STRIKE.
WORKERS STILL COMING IN. The meat strike did not present any new features yesterday. Both local companies report a steady continuance of the conditions that have obtained since they reopened their .works.' It is expected that the Gear Company will have a full board of butchers before the end of next week. So far sineo the reopeuing, only, sheep have been killed at the company's works, but. a' start will probably be made upon cattlo early next week. "Tallies," it is stated, show a considerable improvement; Applications for work aro still coming in. •The Wellington Meat Export Company , had 48 butchers on its board yesterday and in addition to mutton turned ouf. beef for'export. Fair "tallies' have been registered-ajd the company is very well satisfied with the work that is..being done. Applications for work are numerous and several experienced men will join tho board next week. ~ ' The situation regarding • the registration of the slaughtermen's unions is unchanged. Tho Wellington, Canterbury, and Poverty Bay Unions havo been registered. .Registration of the other three unions has not yet been granted. Our Petone correspondent reported last night that things were extremely, quiet in that town.' It is estimated that about fifty members of the old Slaughtermen's Union have left the place. Normally, about one hundred slaughtermen livo at Petone, the 'total including some of the Ngahaurangd men as well as thoso engaged at the Gear works.
