The Mayor of Cliristchurch stated today that as Christchurch had practically been tho headquarters of various Antarctic expeditions, and as a largo number of citizens had been personally acquainted with the members of tho expedition, he thought' that Christchurch people would liko to havo tho opportunity of contributing to a national fund. In order to give them that opportunity, ho had decided to open a list ut tho City Council oince, and ho would bo glad to receive subscriptions from anybody wishing to'contribute. It was piohhble that tho fund ho was starting might be made a New Zealand fund. Ho was communicating with tho mayors of the other cities, with the idea of making it a combined movement. The money collected would be cabled nomo to tho main fnnd as a contribution from New Zealand. Whilst he believed that tho fund would be very largely contributed to in England and elsewhere, it was, nevertheless, the. duty of New Zealand to do their share in complying with the dying wish of tho lost leader.
