Mr. Hugli Hamilton, who for the past eight years'lias been' general manager in New Zealand for the Vacuum Oil Co. l'ly., Ltd., tendered to the Wellington staff a farewell supper at Godber's rooms on Tuesday night. ■ Mr. Hamilton has been promoted to an. executive position in the'head offico pf the company at Melbourne, and leaves for Australia to.doy by the Ulimaroa. Tho death- occurred at Wangnnui; on Wednesday of Mr, A. Elliott, formerly Collector of Customs nt Christclmrch and Wanganui. Ho was to havo retired on superannuation next May, and had purchased a'residence in Wanganui in which ho intended to reside. Tho causo of death was heart failure. Tho into Mr. Elliott was n native of Nelson,'and was educated nt tho college there. Ho had been 45 years in tho ecrvice of tho Government, and was tho oldest Civil Servant, in the Customs Department. His father, Mr. Clias. Elliott, was the founder of tho old "Nelson Examiner" newspaper. Mr. Elliott entered tho Customs service at Nelson, nnd served tho Government at-West-port:, Napier, Dunedin, Grevmouth, and again nt Nelson. In IUO2 ho wns appointed Collector of Customs at Wanganui. About five years nso ho was promote:! to Christchurch. Wherever he was, Mr. Elliott was always a very popular official, and a valuablo servant of tho Government.
