Byron was otaten- by the weight and ' distance/ though he struggled on rcmarkablv wWI. Nothing but Oliver's hortuuiansliip won., tnel lying 'on Peroneal, and victory was ony gained in the very last stride. Bercola led tilt the bottoni'of the straight, when the .whip:} were, drawn on the whole of the field,. ; ,ln a punishing finish tho favourito'won' by a couplo Of lengths from Bercola, with Timothy and Aviatrix'close up. The other starter, Otehan was in the rear the.iF.hoJ6 way. '■:.:'. After-"fho;riice, F.Flynn, rider of Bercola, was called before the stewards, and severely ndinoriished for' crossing Ngatirnanui'going out of the straight the first time.,-' Copestake was also' cautioned for giving. unsatisfactory evidence. - " Hawera form was 'also.'responsible for the heavy, backing' of Sanguinary in the Stewards Handicap, but the black mare, though she got away well, was never .dangerous,.and., was the last to pass tho post. Lucerne took charge, after a furlong had been covered, and w ; as not again beaded;' Tho winner was very sore after her fall at Hawem* but a.coiirso of salt water at New Plymouth assisted' her to throw it off. .Overtime, who.caine with a great reputation from Auckland, ran very disappointingly. Piriwai was out first, but Lucerne soon headed him; and won' easily. There was no loitering oh the way in the First Hack Race, which was won by Zetos, the Waverley gelding getting to tho end of the journey in a tick under Imin. lCsec. Passadena, Grattan, Worcester, and Hotes were all evenly backed, but tho other tko runners were neglected on the maohine, and; ran accordingly. Grattan and'";Zcte'9 'made „the running for three furlongs, V'Wheii tho former shot ahead. Entering 'tho straight,! he looked, to have tho. s race.w6n, bait Zetes is a remarkably Rood-finiaher,-and got up in time to win By .half a length. ' Worcestor just headed Passadena for third place, with tho other pair beaten off. ■ - ' Dearest, despite Iter recent failures, was the favourito in the Cup. The fact that A. Oliver hid the mount probably had a lot to.do,with her.position in the market. Undecided was second favourite, nnd lis ran a' good race under his big impost,

but. whs unlucky enough to' meet -with interference at the six furlongs post. Patriotic made the early running from Denivst and Byron, with. Undecided nnd Mendip next. At the.six furlongs post Lady Meiischikoft nio.'.d up, and shortly afterwards Con the Shaughraun improved his position. As they raced across the bottom of the course, Patriotic gave wn/ to Lady Menschikoff, who was joined by Con the Shaughraun. As they entered the straight, Dearest, on the rails, and Byron were close to the leaders. A great race resulted in favour of Con the Shaughraiin ,by a head. , Dearest'was'a length away, with Byron in a line with her! Then came Undecided and Patriotic.

The stipendiary steward, Mr. J. MacMahpn, reported C- Jloitk, rider of Patriotic, for. crossing Byron at the start, and the stewards, after hearing the evidence of Deeloy and Oliver, suspended him for the'meeting. Tho Open Welter was n good race, the whole field being bunched practically throughout, ltoyal Dragoon mAdo ' tho running from Katua, with Maxwell next. Tho last-named was not at home round the turns, ,and lost a lot of ground. Katua led Royal Simon and a bunched field into the straight.. In tho run homo he held Ills'own from Royal Dragoon and Max-well,-with Kauroa and Muleteer next. Patronymic,; the favourite in the milo Hack Itaco, >'wns very unlucky on the iourney, and was one of the last to finish.' Tho field was bunched down the back stretch, where the colours of Lady Nolan, Couney, White Crane, and Arua'ko were most prominent. Conney.led the field into tho straight, and/ stalling off challenges by Worcester and Minora, she .won ■handily by a length. White Crane was close up fourth; then camo Aruake. Rain commenced to fall, shortly before the start of tho Flying Hnndicap, but it was only a shower, and did'not afreet' the going. There were only five runners, but ..they were nil well backed, and after A great finjsji Peroneal won by the barest of. margins. -Sko was the first to leave the mark, but down the back strctcli Patronale piit a big break on the field. .In the straight the', race looked all over,, but Oliver shook up,Peroneal, nnd, tho roan gelding tiring badly, Peroneal got up in the last stride and won by a nose. Goldsize was a fair third.'

The Scurry went to Yankee Doodle, who drew No. 1 at tho barrier, got out first, and was in charge throughout. The winner has shown pacein many.of her previous starts, and her win to-day was fully expected. . ...
