A SCOTT MEMORIAL.
, (To the Editor.) Sirr-rThe .eloquent', appeal by Captain Scott for an adeqtiate provision, of support for those dependent on him and his gallant companions kill not be heard unavailingly by patriotic Britoins the world over, and, least of all, in Now Zealand. While there is no fear on this account, there is' ; a danger that, just on account of the personal sympathy with the wives anc\ families'of the'brave explorers, the scientific' Work which Captain Scott had so muoh, to heart will be starved for lack, of funds. The collection of observations nnd spediirictts is only the first part- df this .work, and the subsequent working up of this material and tho publication of the results in book form will cost many thousands of. poilnds. Naturally the scientists oh the Expedition will not caro .to raise this question at present* from a feaT of jeopardising Mrs; Scott's interests, nnd meanwhile they must work on under considerable difficulties, nnd probably without any assurance of their salaries. Our first duly to Cnptnin Scott ns a nation is to carry out his last wishes, but it i* equally out duty to ensure that the valuable scientific work which he and hia coinnnnions have done shall not be lost. I would therefore suggest, that a subscription list bo opened for a Scott memorial, on which the first claim trill bo the proper provision' for tho relatives of those who have perishi'd, and the second claim will be lhi> fiiiishinr,' of the labours that Captain Scott has begun. If any funds nre left over, ns there probably will be. they might be used for erecting further memorials of suitable nature to the memorv of the gallant dead.
I wmild further suprcrV tliht tile subscription* received he handed over to Jtr. Kinsey for transmission to the Enclisli Committee. controlling the Expedition, the nllocation of the money being left to them. Unless Hiis is done, the English Committee mny have morn money tlmn they need for the fulfilment, of, Captain Scott's Inst wishes, mid yet bo unable to use, it for purposes very dear to his heart. I havo much pleasure in enclosing a subscription to,such a. fund.—l am, etc, J. ALLAN THOMSON. [We shall receive any other subscriptions that may be umt, mid forward them wherever directed.]
