THE AMENDED A'CT. Mr. Carmichael's University of Sydney Act came into effect on February 1, and interest will ccntro in the election of the Senate Under the amended Act, tho University Sennto is now elected,' excepting that the Chancellor, Sir Normand MacLaurin, and tho Vice-Chnncellor, Judge Backhouse, are life-senators. Tho Sonat* consists of four fellows to bo appointed by tho Governor, one elected by the Legislative Council, ono by the Legislative Assembly, five by the teaching staff of tho University, ten by the University graduates, and three to be elected by the foregoing fellows, after their own. election.. Tho Minister for Education,' Mr. Carmicliael, will represent the Legislative Assembly until the Houso meets and elects its representative, while Sir Francis Suttor wilr represent the . Legislative Council. The appointment of the four Government nominees is now under the consideration of the Minister, while the by-laws. governing the election, of the University representatives have been framed by the existing Senate, and arc now awaiting Executive approval. It is probable tkattho election will take place about the middle of April. Except in, Regard to tho fellows elected by the teaching staff, who are elected for two years, members of tho Senate will hold office for five years.
