PAINFUL SENSATION.
HOW THE NEWS WAS RECEIVED IN WELLINGTON. THE PRIME MINISTER'S TRIBUTE. Following upon; the comparatively assuring news from Christchurch to tho effect (presumed by a Christchurch reporter) that Captain Scott was on board the Terra Nova, the message from London conveying tho bare announcement of the tragedy which b'efel the ill-fated explorer and his companions on their "e----turn from tho Polo, created a painful sensation in Wellington, and,, in,'fact, all over tho Dominion. Tho first intimation held out the faintest hope that perhaps the _mcssage had been mangled in transmission, and that the commander, of the expedition might still be safe.' As will be, seen to-day,■ .he worst'fears have fecn realised. Sympathy in New Zealand has been spontanrouo and widespread. ■
