NOTES AND COMMENTS.
.' [Br Glencoe.]'./. i". ■ - . Nominations for tho Napier Park Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Friday_next with the club's secretary, Mr. J. E. Gleadow; . . An indication of the growing popularly. Jf trotting in Christchurch (says tho Lyttelton Times") is furnished by the totahsator investments for the February meetings of the Canterbury Jockey Club and New. Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. The fixtures aro limited to one day -each, and neither attracts much attention except from local sportsmen. At the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday/ February 1, tho investments wero .£14,755, while at the. Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting a - week later : they amounted to ', -.-..■ It is reported from Riverton that it is doubtful if tho hurdle racer Red Earl will journey to the Duuedin Jockey Club's autumn fixture. -The leg which the son of Black and Red knocked severely at,the South .Canterbury J .C.'s meeting in April of last year is causing trainer , Thistleton some anxiety.
The Oakleigh Plate, 5 furlong 3 and a half, will bo run at Caulfield on Saturday next. : • ~
It is only a. few weeks back' (says a writer in the "Southland Times") since Vid was placed by tho majority of the Riverton,train-n-s as tho slowest horse at' the /seaside training ground, yet ho has come on rapidly in the meantime and won several races. The gelding is.owned by Mr. J. Hymcr, owner of, Soldiers' Chorus, who also claims as-his'property •Feodor, a full brother to Vid.' r- ■■ ■ '- On Wednesday last' Mr. J.'Sherwood,' an old member of the Southland Racing Club, and an enthusiastic follower of tho turf, celebrated his 84th birthday, Tho Menschikoff gelding, Electrakoff, has changed hands, and was shipped 'to Sydney by the Maheno from Auckland on. Monday. Judging by the successes of other New Zealand horses, Electrakoff should have little difficulty in picking up a 6take or.two.
The TeAroha Jockey Club's annual meeting will be held to-day. The prinsipal event is the Cup, in which Jt-lio Pillo has a big impost. However, she may not be a starter, and, in her awence, Flying Soult, who is improving with every race, will bo the favourite.
Miss Explosion has been running.badly in her hurdle engagements lately, and,her trainer, E. Pope, is going to give her a chance, over big country. She is a fine big mare, and despite the fact that she was operated for throat troubles, she stays on in her races.;
Owing to a family bereavement, Mr. E. Alison withdrew tne Auckland horses Tiresome and Allegation from their Taranaki engagements.' They will most likely bo sent to Wanganui.
Maxwell was brought down from Auckland to fulfil engagements at. Taranaki. The brother to Soultline has been doing good.work at home, and may bo' .wrd to beat in the moderate company opposed to him. A couple of weeks ago he beat Scorch in a gallop over a mile, and as the last-named won two of tho principal races at the Poverty Bay meoting, -beating Birklinc and others. Maxwell should at least run well. Worcester, who is engaged in two hack events at the Taranaki meeting to-day, is a brother to Jolie Pill©. At the Takapuna meeting Worcester showed form by running second in the Stewards' Handicap and winning .tho Welter on the" last day.: Worcester won the Welter easily, but he had a very poor field to, beat. He is not a good liorso at the post. Monotone, tho chestnut three-year-old brother to Apellon, was evidently ---not looked upon as payable property by his owner, Mr.'P. ftl'Manemin, as he sold the gelding for .£2O during the Te Kuiti meeting. Late' 1 in tho day Monotone changed hands at. .EK). The Auckland crack two-year-old of last season,, Prince Soult, has yet.to earn a winning bracket this season. At present tho. colt is reported to ba moving along nicely in his exercises, and hopes are entertained that he will turn tho fables on some of his conquerors at the Auckland Easter meeting. " .
R.- Hatch is to ride Undecided in tho Taranaki Cup to-day. The success of the big bay gelding at Egmont will probably cause him to start favourite to-day, and providing ho can negotiate tho turns, which arc sharp, ho should run well. Dearest will also come in for strong support, as she has dono some excellent hack work since arriving at New Plymouth. Sea Queen is an unlikely starter ia the Taranaki Cup to-day, but she will probably bo a runner in tho Paul Memorial Handicap to-morrow. This event is usually started with a flag, which form of dispatch should euit tho St. Ambroso marc. Toreador, who walked away vita, two hack races at Takapuna, has been mado to pay the penalty for his wins, and at the South Auckland meeting ho is asked to conceded the speedy Apcllon 71b. It is hardly likely that Toreador will be paid up for. Tho Auckland horseman, J. Conquest, is to ride Worcester in his engagements at Now Plymouth to-day. The New Zealand-owned Manakau is nominated at Mooreficld on Saturday next. * Master Theory, who went wrong on the cvo of the last Grand National meeting, is again in work at F.llerslie. He will not be hurried, but will be prepared for the jumping season. An oner has been mode for tho stallion Gluten, and it is quite on the enrds that tho sire of Goldsize, G'.oy, and Tangnvai will change hands. FIXTURES. ' Feb. 12 and 13—Taranaki .T.C. Autumn.
