TRAM OR FERRY?
, A MIRAMAR PROBLEM,
; A deputation of Miramar residents waited on tho Public Works Committee of the Miramar Borough Council in' regard to tho proposal to subsidise tho Wellington Steam Ferry Company to continue to run a service between Seatouu and Knraka Bay and tho city. : ■ bpeaking on behalf of' the deputation, Mr. J. Brodie strongly advocated an oxtension of the tramway'system from the terminus at Seatoun to Karaka Bay, by l way of Church Streot and the Marino Parade, in lieu of giving what amounted to a subsidy to the Ferry Company, and pointed out that'such an extension would proceed along an already populated route. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. JS f . Bell) stated' that such an extension would bo very expensive. According to a report furnished by tho engineer (Mr. W. H. Bennett); the extension would be 58 chains in length, and would cost to lay down about .CGOOO. Tho interest, sinking fund, and car mileago would require a return of about .£7OO a year, without contemplating any profit. An hourly service would mean a cost of 19s. per day, or ,£315 per annum in car mileage charges, which would bo a very heavy burden on such an extension.
Mr. Bell stated that the views of tho deputation would bo considered. At prcsont tho whole question of communication botween Miramar and Wellington was under consideration. Ultimately he thought that the chief avenno of communication would bo by ferry to tho Miramar Wharf, and thence by tram to tho different parts of the borough, but as yet they were hardly in a position to put forward a definite scheme.
