ENTERTAINMENTS.

HUGARD, TO-NIGHT. Ono of tho most noted and mystifying attractions presented to Wellington audiences is suid to bo the performance of tho magician Hugard and his company, who open u six-nights' season at tho Opera House to-night. Hugard's show brings •the East with all its- colour and mystery, before tho eyes of tho audience. In the second part of the programme tho stago is a blnzo of Oriental colour and effect, and Ching Sung Loo and his assistants, bsdecked in tho finest costumes of tho East, present a striking appearance. Not a word is spoken, yet trick after trick, illusion after illusion, follow each other in succession, and tho audience has hardly time to wonder how it is dono before another mystery is put before them. In the-first part of the programme Hugard will givo an exposition of sleight-of-hand. His rifle act should help to drawbig housea Miss Alyra Errington, an American musical novelty expert, will make her first appearance here, also Georgo Carman, an .English . comedian. 'The box plan and' day sales are as usual.

HIS MAJESTY'S .THEATRE. Evidence of tho popularity of the picture shows at His Majesty's Theatre is forthcoming in the largo crowds that nightly fill the seats. A capital change of programme is advertised tor to-night, when the bill will be headed by a powerful drama, entitled "Tho Young Millionaire." Other good numbers will be "The Grassville Girls" (comedy), "I Saw Him First" (comedy), "Fight in. the Dark" (drama), "Chief White Eagle" (drama), and "Constantinople" (scenic), beats may be reserved at the Dresden. THEATRE ROYAL. ; The usual change of programme will be staged at the Theatre Royal to-night, Jules Garrison and the Roman Maids v.'ill make' their reappearance in a sketch en-, titled "A 'Bit of Nonsense," and Mr. Gar-' rison will recite Kipling's famous "Gunga Djin." "Victor the Great" will be (he star attraction,'! and Maud Fanning, Fred Rivenhall, and others will. also introduce new items.. . ■ ' THE NEW THEATRE. The change of programme- to-day and to-night at tho New Theatre continuous' pictures will include an elaborate feature drama, "Fra Diavolo.". • The plot refers to the escapades of a famous bold brigand of tho Italian forests. Ho is noted for his graceful swagger, self assurance, cun : ning, and devilry. The strango adventures of Fra Diavolo, as he is called, provides a picture which, occupies oyer three-quar-ters of an hour. The pictures to be shown to-day supplementary to "Fra Diavolo" will include "Tho Water Wagon," "Making a Soldier," "Monarchs of Prairies," "The Love of Summer." Tho. supporting items in tho evening. include .Taming their Parents," "Scenes in and Around Symaria," "The Outlaw's Sacrifice," and "The Bachelor's Bridge."

THE KING'S THEATRE. ' "The Stolen Favourite" is the name of a stirring sporting drama, .which is to head tho picture bill at the King's The.atre to-night. Tho story is woven round 'the. theft and ultimate recovery of Whirlwind, a filly, in training for the Grand Prix de Paris.. The exclusive Vitagraph number this week will be "When Persistency and Obstinacy. Meet." Other good item's will- be "The Young Millionaire," "The'vPeninsular ,of Sorniione,"- "Fog," "Pathe Gazette," etc.

"Christopher Columbus" (or "The Discovery of America"), by the Selig Company, will'.be introduced for the first time in Wellington to-day and to-night at the Empress Theatre continuous pictures. It is stated that this work took' three years to, complete, required a cast of 3GO picked \ performers, and cost i£lo,oflo. Neither- timo Jior money was spared in depicting the theme, with the closest attention to .correctness in detail. At tho request of his Holiness Pope Pius X, the. film' at tho Vatican, and the Popo .!%ss. so pleased .with tho •, work that he printed Mr. Selig'with a medal. PALACE. In tho chango of programme to' bo screened at the People s-Picture Palace a wide rango of subjects is promised. The leading film will be "The Smart, Lady Detective," which is. described as a dramatic subject of particular interest to the -ladies.
