THE FIHST IMPORTATIONS. -' A veteran Jersey • breeder in the person of Mr..A. 11. Halcombe, of Urenui, who judged the Jerseys-at tho Feilding show,- gave some early history of the breed in New Zealand at the annual smoke concert held in- 1 connection with the show. Mr. IJnlqonibej-'by -the way, claimed.to bo the oldest breeder of purebred Jerseys in New Zealand. The; first pedigree animals of,the breed, ho said, were imported into the Dominion in. 18GI' by a iJr. .Severs, who landed a bull and two heifers. 'The animals came to the iiaugitikci district,. and were subsequently purchased by' Mr. L.' Daniel, of Wanganui, who also imported somo stock for himself. Later the herd was purchased by/'Mr. Wm. Owen, and then they came into the possession of his (Mr. Halcombe's) mother. This stock formed.the foundation of li herd which later distributed stock-all over New Zealand. In passing, Air. Halcombe remarked that the bulls in the Jerseys ho had judged, at the'show were exceptionully weak. ■' -y
