" • ' (By ToleKraph.—Sroolal OorrtuDondent.) Hawera, February 5. ' Perfect: weather was experienced for the opening of the Egmont Cup mooting, and a record .crowd attended. The racing was good throughout:' ' As was anticipated, Bobrikoff had a very easy task in tho Hawera Stakes, and the Cup was nearly as, good a thing.for Undccidod, who was a winner practically tho whole way. . ' . Contrary to v/hat was expscted, backers wore not called-upon to lay heavy odds on Bobrikoff in the Hawera Stakes. This camo about through tho black gelding being very foro, and also because F. Davis ' had openly expressed tho opinion that he would not be surprised if lio wore defeated so. soro was ho. Notwithstanding this he certainly did tho best preliminary. Masterpiece was jogged .about before the start —tactics which wero successfully pursued at Trenthrfm. Alendip now makes a noiso, and Lady Menschikoff looked hardly feady., The paco was a 1 crawl, after an )xcellent start, and this of courso was 'ight into the favourito's hands. : After the six-furlongs post had boen passed, the champion was in behind the lenders, and tho public now started applauding. At the naif-mile tho favourito took charge, and then ran along Under a strong pull for tho remainder, of the journey. .Ha was
cheered to the echo, and also got another roception on raturmug to woigii in. Sandy Paul brought nfcoiit the downfall of a very hot tavOunte--Aviatvix—m the Open 'llurdlcs. As usual, the latter made the pace very fast, but Samly Paul, who looked -well, a trifia big perhaps, nuvoi' allowed her to got far utyay, ami, three furlongs itom home, Julian took Hint to 'the tront. At the last fence the pair ■wero together again, but Samly Paul stood oil well, and jumped tho better of the pair, and this won him the race. Ma'rton was a good way in the. rear, just clear of Whimper}'who came troni a long way back. Ngatuuahui gavo some trouble at tho post in the H'acK Hurdles, but Air. O'Connor finally got them away to a good statt. Princess Flo and 'fimotny were tho first t> (become prominent, -but Ngatiruanui, who was a good lavourite, took charge at the second lence, and was there throughout.' Ho camo w'ith a great reputation,, mid his supporters said that he only had to leave the mark to: win. Tlni was so, but ho had assistance on the journey from at least one other horse.. •;A' big 'field of light-weight hacks were engaged in tho Mel'emete llack Flat Handicap, and, as n consequence, there were several inexperienced riders in tho saddle. The result was that a lot of 'chopping about took place; and, after the first two turlongs' hnd been covered, Treo Lucerne came down, and Luoemo and Lady Gordon fell over him. Dr. Paget, who was riding Lucerne, .escaped witn u ' shaking, but O'Shea and M'Donald wero bailly bruised. Handsome Maid, Jack Pin, and Sylvia' Alay Were-in chargo entering tho straight, but then the favourite, Grat- . tan, got a lucky, run on ■ the and scored nicely by: a neck from Park Tide, who came on the outside the whole way,and was very uniucky not to score. It was the general opinion that the Cup field was a high-Class one, and the issuo was regarded as open. Labour Day was tho absolute favourite, with Undecided and Mira openly backed. At the start Royal Dragoon shot out. with Patriotic neit, just ciear of Undecided and Kina. Passing the stand Atatlow joined Royal Dragoon, whilo Undeoided went up on tho inside of-Patriotic, and then came Kina and Cheddar. Down tho back the lead-' era were joined by. Mira and Manawakaha,! but, at,tho half-mile, Oliver took tho Trentliam gelding, to the, front; and, from theitco,, the .race, was a procession. Con the Shaughraun and Alira ,mado strong efforts to get up, but: tlie winnor held them at bay, and won' very comfortably. Labour .Day, Kina, Brown Trout, and Patriotic were the next to finish, j Aloirette—a ' fair performer , in hack class—and Nebulous Wero the best backed in the Ladies' Purse, -At the start Styrax whipped round, and unseated his rider. Haydn Park made the pace from ; Afoiretto till the straight was reached, when Royal Patron. .came up on the'outside, and,' after, a good finish with Moirette, beat her.by. a neck'. :!. Goldsizo and Dearest .were the . only onas backed for good'moncy in the Flying Handicap, and, strange to . say, i Sanguinary, was entirely neglccted on the 111achine. From' 'a. i>erfeet ,start the field raced in'a line for a furlong, )yhen Peroneal and Sanguinary became' prominent, and Dearest got serir back :to last place. Sanguinary led Peroneal into the straight, ivhero_ Dearest got ;through on the' fence, and Katua camo fast on the outside. In a very, close'finish Sannui nary won by i a head from Katiia, wita -.Peroneal ' and Dearest next,: and the others in a duster. Ineuru was; left at the post. Postillion closed up a hot favourito in the. concluding event, but he' drew an outside, position at the , barrier, and' this helped to bring /; 'aboiit 'his downfall. •Phroso; on tha riils, began sniartly, and led throughout., |! Thai favourite' ran a good- race,-and VffS in second position till, the , last stride, jj when. 'fetikura .headed' him. The reniMnder of tho field were strung out: • SECOND/. DA'I'S ACCEPTANCES.
