ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL;

A nieetihgof tho council of the-, Vellihgton Zoological Society ; was held,last night. Tho ltov. J. Crewos presided,'arid, tliero was a good attendance of members, ! ,- The; .secretary, reported; that although the City Cduncilcould -hot. grant permission to the society to take, up several collections, for which tho society hod made application,, permission, to tnio up Olio collection was later received by the society. It had, however, bfeon: found impracticable to arrange for a blind concert arid acollectibn on either of,tlio. dates for which permission had been granted. The chairman related,what he had done by way.,'of, negotiating to re-tain Messrs. Wirth Brothers' lioness as. a permanent inmate of the Zoo. Ho had,, however, read in one of tho local newspapers that the City.Council negotiating, and that ah effort was being made to raise funds for the purchase of the animal by public subscription, lie hid since received' from Councillor Frost an authority to'collect funds -towards tlio cost of'the purchaso of the lioness. '• , It was decided that tho chairman, acknowledge Co-uticillor Frost's courtesy, and express the . society's hifiarty . good wishes for tho success of tlio scheme, but that ho return'the list. Tho meeting thought tho society should work earneillv to obtain tho flamingoes tho City Council had consented to receive, to increase tho number of bower birds, to procure scrub turkoys, to obtain n bear to -occupy tho excellent pit the City -, Council had provided,; and to. popularise tho art competitions for which tho society has, with the New Zealand Academy of Fine, Alls, almost completed arrangements, The president reported that si nco tho end of last. financial year about four months ago there had been placed'in tlio Zoo by or through the; socif-ty one flam', ing'o, two plumed pigeons, two kiwis, ono white duck, and two.hcd|jelio«s, and ono flamingo had been placed, in the Nowtowit Museum. , . ~..:.'. •'.'•••■■,-■
