An effort is being made to form a swimming club,in Petone, and a public meeting will be held shortly. ■Ratepayers to the Hutt River Board in Petone and Hutt are reminded of the extraordinary election takes place today. Tho Intest has taken place in the shop of a Chinese in Jackson Street. Some time between Snndnv night and early on Monday mornincr thieves broke a window and ransacked the.till and made off with 10s..in cash.
Our Upper" Hutt correspondent writes: Tho, Hutt ; County, Council evidently fear the result of carrying tho Upper Hutt Town Board's water-main pipes ' across their bridgo at Akataorawa. In their opinion the structure is not equal to carrying the nddod" strain, some eight tons equally distributed each side thereof. At the next meeting of .the Town Board, the council's suggestion asking tho board to contribute fivo guineas cost of examination of the board bv tho council's advisory engineer (Mr. Fulton) will be discussed. The loord's engineer (Mr. LaingMeason) advises strengthening the bridge with reinforced concrete, tho board to contribute approximately 6omo ,£350, the like amount it the board to erect a structure of its owii sufficient to span the river and carry tho nipes across independent of the council altogether.
