Tho local telephone exchange, which has of late been open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., will (as from to-day) open at 7 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. At a meeting held in Carterton on Friday evening, it was decided to take steps to hold a Caledonian sports gathoring in Carterton, undor the auspi.eces of, the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, Masterton. Mr. D. ,J. M'Auley, of, Carrington, has produced an improved machine for sewing seeds and patent manures broadcast.' The R«v. A. C. W. Standage, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Carterton. ' Father Bowe, of Carterton, who been attending the retreat at Wellington, returned home on Friday evening. OTAKI. A young man named J. Mears had the. top of one of his fingers cut off while engaged in a sawmill. He received medical attention at tho hospital. / . Miss Agnes Ransfield, daughter of Mr. H. Ransfield, died in a motor-car on Saturday while being conveyed from Rangitikei to Manakau. Deceased had been in ill-health for some time. Otaki's. meteorology for January, 1913, is as follows:—Total rainfall, 3.88 in.; days with rain, 16; maximum for one day, 1.32 in. (on 27th) j total for January last year 2.50 in.; average for January since the year 1905, 2.92 in. The total rainfall for the year 1912 was 44.29 in., and tho average annual total for the last eight yearß, 39.80 in. -.'■•',- FEILDING. The schools reopened to-day after (tho Christmas and New Year holidays. The attendances were better than thoso of tho corresponding period of last year. The rainfall in Feilding for January was 3.77 inches on 13 days, the heaviest fall being 1.26 inches on January 1. For the corresponding month of last year tho fall was 1.70 inches on eloven days.' Mr. Frank Lethbridge has promised to provide about six acres of land near Feilding for the use of tho boys attouding tho agricultural classes at the District High School.
