CHAMPIONSHIPS.

IN ATHLETICS,

CONTEST FOR M'YILLY SHIELD.

CLOSE & EXCITING.

THE WELLINGTON A.A.C. WINS IT.

If the amateur athletes of the Wellington Province had been capable of knocking any records out of shape there was never a better opportunity for them to have done so than on, Saturday, when the Wellington Provincial Championship meeting was held oil tho Basin Keservo under the auspices of the Wellington Centre JJ.Z-A.A.A. The weather was .ideal, the track was in good order, and the attendance was larger than is usually seen at a sports meeting in Wellington. But the records did not suffer, and in only four instances were tho standards equalled or bettered.

On the day's results it would seem that Wellington is-lacking a real champion, unless, indeed, it bo J. Wilton, who is undoubtedly capablo of running a very fast quarter-mile. He easily bettered the standard time on Saturday, and his performance was all the moro pleasing on account of the fact that the fate of the M'Villy Shield depended on the result.

: Nine tennis competed for this shield, which had been previously won by the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. It was early seen that the contest lay between the Wellington A.A.C. and the Wairarapa A.A.C. Until the second to last event (the three-mile run) Wellington led, but Cook's "second" in the Taco named made tho scores read: Wairarapa, 42; Wellington, 41. In the final event, however, Wellington gained six points against Wairarapa's four, and thus won tho shield by a point. ' ■The sport generally did ■ not provide much excitement, but the three-mile run was an exception. .This resulted in a great straggle between Byrne and Cook over the last, half-mile, and both runners were vociferously apphuded after the race, the defeated man receiving the bigger ovation. Mr. T. W. Leslie acted as starter, Mr. J. H. Pollock as standard timp-keeper, and Mr. J. C. Cusack qs marshal and clerk of.course. Thcs9 officials were assisted in their efforts by a great many others. ■ ■ ' • Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey) and the Hon. F. M.
