BOXING.

TRUSCOTT MEETS HEGARTY.

THE FORMER "WINS ON POINTS,

(By .Telegraph.—Proas Association.)

v, . Napier, February 1. On inday evening the llawke's Bay Amateur Boxing Association held a very successful carnival in the Princess Theatre, Hastings. Thoro was a crowded house. The takings amounted to .£140." 1 :

The chief item was a contest between Lyn Truscott (welter-weight champion of Now Zealand) and J. Hegarty, of Timaru (light-weight champion of i\ew Zealand) for a purse of ~50.. This produced a most interesting and scientific contest. Hegarty, who had an unbeaten record, was conceding 101b. to his opponent, and tho championship was not involved. Tho Timaru lad entered tho ring as fit as tho proverbial fiddle,'and, during tho earlier rounds, gave his opponent not a moment's peace. As the ; contest progressed, his pace slackened, but, until tho final round, he was all the time keen to engage his bigger": and more experienced opponent. ~

Truscott was not so . fit as .Hegarty, yet ho; lasted remarkably well, and his superior Seienoe enabled him' to find favour with the refereo (Mr. Sampson, of Wellingtdii) cn points. The decision was not popular, for Hegarty, is a great favourite in Hastings, and the crowd, in inaking their adjustment could loot','-no further than "tho little marvel" who.had made, all the fighting., Tho bout was contested on both sides; with tho utmost fairness. , •

In tho opening round Hegarty led out fiercely, but was met by a groat defence, and Truscott seemed very 0001, Hegarty's round. In. tho second round Hegarty again led out; and seemed to have Truscott wondering at his speed and ferocity. Apparently Truscott was looking 'for a chaneo to administer a "knockout." and meantime Hegarty landed several good ones. At this stage lie was distinctly tlio quicker of the pair: Hegarty's round. Truscott's wind did not seem sound in the third; round, and Hegarty .worried him by tlio speed of his ottneki Truscott defended well,'but was blowing badly. This was easily Hegarty's round. Tho fourth round opened with Truscott boxing cleanly and well, but Hegarty per-' sisted, and, towards tho close of tho round, landed sovoral good blows. Hegarty's round again. In tlio" fifth round Hegarty was not so vigorous, but landed several blows. Truscott was still playing tho waiting game. Hegarty's round." In the sixth round Truscott opened out with somo jabs to the face, 'and Hegarty replied with, some good body blows. Some rattling exchanges then took place,' and Truscott almost landed the desired upper-cut. An even round. In tho next round Hegarty. got in tlireo good, jabs, took a hard body blow in returli, and .then followed up with a strong attack.' Hegarty's round. In the eighth' round, Truscott opened out, but Hegarty's condition stood him in good stead. Towards the close Truscott landed a couplo of good punishing upper-cuts, but this failed to stop.Hegarty for nioro than on instant. Truscott's round. In the ninth round, Hegarty still forced the pace, with Truscott looking for openings that seldom came. Hegarty got several .punches homo to the face, and Truscott could mnko no marked headway. An oven round. Tho tenth round found Truscott boxing very cleanly, and stopping Hegarty's attack apparently easily. Truscott's round. Iro tho eleventh round Trusoott opened, with 6omo good blows to tho face, but.towards tho oloso Hegarty replied with two to tho jaw ah(j a body blow. Truscott's round. In. tho twelfth round Truscott opened with good strong blows to tho fnce, but failed to keep Hegarty off. Truscott at this stage was using his v length to advantage, and boxing distinctly the better of tho two, Truscott's round easily. In tho thirteenth round Truscott vainly sought openings, and took somo chances to achieve his purposo. Truscott's round. In tho fourteenth round Truscott opened out vigorously, but Hegarty was still strong enough to withstand an attack, while his smother against a possiblo knock-out was very effectivo.

In tho last round Heir, arty mot his'opponent's attack by lending out, but tho round was not specially eventful; though Truseott certainly' hod tho better of the exchanges.

Prior to tho big contest several local amateur events wore decided. W. Moriarty (Wnipawn) defeated D. Thomtiwm (Hastings), tho latter being disqualified for holding nnd pushine, W; Sliutt (Hastings) defeated W. Brown (Napier). The former ,gave a brilliant exhibition, nnd tho referee intervened in tho second round to save Brown from severe punishment. • '
