Our Auckland correspondent telegraphs that at a meeting of tlio Land Board tho question of the freehold cropped up.' In reply to Mr. Harris, who'.had asked about the conservation of the State's rights in respect of minerals, tho ' Commissioner said that if leaseholders .wanted, tho freehold of land which contained coal or other minerals it would not be granted without a proper reservation. Tho Commissioner referred, to tho Southland section, and 6aid that as a ■ matter of fact the lease issued in respect'of that section was specially endorsed so. as .to reserve the mineral rights, and if the: freehold had been given, without perpetuating tile reservation it had been given contrary to the spirit of tho Acts, and would bo rectified. Only a preliminary deed had as vet been given, and. tho full titlo was not yet issued.
