A case which Is said to have an important bearing on the preference clause which exists in an agreement between tho Federated _ Seamen's Union of Australasia and shipping companies trading to New Zealand is to come before the Magistrate's Court in Wellington on February 7. In tho statement of claim it was set out that on January 24 the union and the shipping companies arrived at an agreement in which it was provided that would, give preference to tho members of the union. On December 11, 1!)12, defendant sri.ys, he applied in writing to join tho»union, and .sont Ids., the maximum sum for entrance fee and subscription. Tho defendants, or one of them (the plaintiff alleges) unlawfully neglected and refused to permit Hansen to join tho union; with the intention- of preventing him from getting work, afid actually prevented him obtaining employment as a seaman. On this account Hansen claimed ' ,£l9' as damages^
