Cook was charged at the Pohco Court to-day with the.theft of ten gallons of whisky,. valued at. .£l4, the property of tho lnvercargill Corpornthn. Accused pleaded guilty to. the offence, 1 which was committed on January, 27,'. ■ Mr. Eustneo. Russell, who appeared for accused, 6aid that on tho .day previous tho ono on which tho. offenco was oommittcd both tho accused and another man, named M'Quarrie, had been unloading casks of . whisky frpm the s.s. Invcrcargill on to the jetty and then carrying them to the store. ' On tho day of tho information they purchased a keg of beer from ono of tho depots, and having coußunied' tho contents prooecded to the jetty with the empty keg. and an .auger. They got undor tho wharf, and M'Quarrie placed the auger between the two flooring boards and bored a hole through one of> the casks, letting the • whisky run' into " the empty keg. When it was filled they stopped up tho hole, proceeded homo, consumed somo of the liquor, and bottled tho remainder. By this time they were considerably intoxicated, and.ma'do a second visit to tho jetty for moro'of tho whisky. Whilo getting tho "return" they had allowed o quantity of the contents to run on tho ground beneath, and this resulted in tho theft being detected; Ho asked for probation. : ,' His Worship oould not see his way to grant probation, and sentenced Conk to Jhjeo months' imprisonment, and allowed M Quarrio's case •to stand ovoi; until' a future date. -
