"NIGHTBIRDS." Tho sparkling opera bouffo "Nijilitbirds," with its catchy wnltz refrains, its wealth of comedy, entrancing orchestration, and graceful old-fcimo ballets charmed another largo audience at tho. Opera Houso last evening. Mr. W. S. Percy, as chief laughter-maker, scored heavily in several parts welded into one. When he is not changing his clothes ho is on the stage, and when ho is on tlio. stage thero is not a dry eye in tho audience. Miss Murphy sings well as tho Countess Cliquot, and Hiss Sybil Arundalo both sings and acts with heart and eoul and voice. Mr. Edward Sherras presents a clever character study as Prince OrlofFsky, and Mr. Fred. Winn, as Blind, an imbecile lawyer, wanders round at wide intervals lilco an owl looking for its .perch in the sunshine.
On Tuesday next and for the following two nights tho New Comio Opera Company will bo seen in a revival (after ■eight years) of "The Cingaleo." On this occasion Miss Sybil Arimdale will appear as "Nanoya," tho character sho is credited with having created in London when •this delightful work was originally presented. During its recent' revival at 'Auckland, it met with a most successful time. Tho cast is an exceptionally strong one, and includes Miss Amy Murphy as Lady Patricia Voreker, Miss Dorothy Brunton as Peggy Sabine; then' tho male portion of the company will be fully represented, Mr. Reginald Roberts appearing as Bobby Warren, Mr. W. S. Percy as Chambuddy Ram, Mr. Fred. Winn as' Sirpeter Loftus, Mr. Victor Prince as Boobhamba Chettour Bhoy, Charles . Albert as Myamgah, And Talleur Andrews as Hon. Harry Voreker; Miss Sybil Arundal introduces an. unique danoe in tho second act. For the last two nights "Dorothy" will be revivod with a powerful cast. "GET-RICF-QTTICK WALLINGFORD." ''Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford," the bright, clever, and exceedingly . funny comedy which is enjoying a very successful season in Duneain, will be presented by J. C. ' .Tho excellenco of the present programme of tho Empress Theatre continuous pictures appealed lo a largo attendance at each session yesterday afternoon and evening. Tho foremost item is the A.B. exclusive comedy drama; "Tho Now York Hat." The sensational railroad adventure "Juan and Juanita" finds much favour. Tho popularity is also, established of "Nina's Evening Prayer," . "Warwick Chronicle," "Picturesque England," "Jinx's Birthday Party," and others. These subjects will appear for tho last timo to-day. and to-night. Tho management announqes tho introduction on Monday, at all sessions, of the Selig speotacular drama, "Tho Count of Monto Cristo." 'This production is described as a fascinating adaptation of Dumas's charming romantic story, staged and mounted on a luxurious scale. It is also announced that this copy, which occupies over threequarters of an hour, is tho only one in New Zealand, and is different to any other of a similar title. Tho Selig Company expended a hugo.sum in the creation of this film. ' PEOPLE'S PICTURE PALACE. Both tho Pathe Gazette and thb Gau-. Mont Graphic aro included in the films at present being shown at the People's Picture Palace in Manners Street, but tho leading item is the "Pirate's Daughter," a stirring drama by the Selig Co. This and tho other films wero witnessed by largo numbers of peoplo at the various sessions yesterday. This afternoon special efforts will bo made to pleaso the children with an attractive selection of subjects. ' THELMA PETERSEN CONCERT. The farewell concert to bo givon by Miss Thelma Petersen, tho young New Zealand contralto, will bo held on Wednesday, February 6, at tho Concert Chamber, Town Hall, ou tho eve of her, departure for Ixmdon. Miss Petersen, will be hoard ia somo of her best numbers, and .will be assisted by Messrs J. Culford Bell, Alright, Fletcher, Zauto J. Wood, and the Orpheus Quartet Party. This act is said to bar© run in New York ami Loadqri lalono for blx consecutive months. Hugard's great rifle act is'his own invention. It is described as follows: He allows threo local riflemen to bring their own rifles and cartridges, load them and mark tlii shells and bullets, also to linvo a committeo on tho stage. Tho bullets and shells aro also marked by different individuals in tho audioneo. Tho men then fire from tho back of tho stalls. Hugard catches tho bullets, returns tho exploded shells (with cordito) and bullets with tho grooves of the riflo upon them, hot, nnd all tho private marks upon them.
