SUPREME COURT JUDGES-
MR. JUSTICE COOPER-TO TAKE TEE AUCKLAND-DISTRICT. Complaint lias been madb for somo time past of tho delays in legal business, owing to the increase in Supremo Court work and tho frequent absences of Mr. Justice Jidivards in Wellington. Tlio Chief Justice has now notified tho Govern-, ment that it has been arranged that Sir.' Justico Cooper shall takeup the Auckland work in conjunction with Sir.'Justice Edwards. The Auckland" judicial district, comprises sittings at New-Plymouth and. Gisborne. The .new' arrangement will coini menoo on February 1, aiul Mr. Justice Cooper will probably reside in Auckland. '■Tlioifluestion of creating an Appeal Court, consisting of three judges, instead of assembling air the judges in Wellington to hear appeal cases, has frequently teen under consideration, and probably somo action in that direction will bo'taken in tho near future. It is pointed out that in England three judges deal with appeals, and that the High Court of 'tho' Australian Commonwealth formerly conslitod of three judges. Fivo judges now constitute this Court. Tho New Zealand practice of takiiig all the.' judges from their circuits is inconvenient and costly, and* tho work all round could, probably bo done moro cconomicallj and efficiently if tho Court of Appeal were differently constituted—Auckland "Star."
