' Before-his departure for , Sydney from Melbourne on January 23, the Minister for Defence, in .regard to Australia's present deficient horso supply for military purposes, said: "Two years ago wo had not ,n solitary battory in Australia for which a special horso team was provided. Now we ( Jiavo horses, for overy battery. Something, thorefore, has been done. The horses wo havo were all bought locally, and ore quito efficient, and we can get moro of them for as many batteries as we wish. I am seized, however, of tho necessity of further action. It is only a question of timo and money. Tho fact must not bo lost sight of that very much has been done in two years. Previously reliance had to.be placed on. brewery and quarry, horses .for. battery work, and tho same ■ horses could'never bo obtained for two consecutive drills. The position was that the artillery men were engaged in training their horses continually, and had no opportuntiea for drilling themselves."
