GREAT BATTING. ' FIRSMVICKET RECORD PUT UP. Splendid batting marked tho commencement of tho fourth round of tho mid-week matches at tho Basin yesterday afternoon. I'rido of place in these achievements is easily won bv the great partnership of Rinvig and Bui-ko (Rivals). They put on no fewer limn 1!)9 runs for the iirst wicket—a record for Wednesday cricket. Towards I his striking total Kinvig's share was 115, and Burko scored 79. Taken altogether, it constituted a splendid achievement. The match. Union t. Oriental was a good match to watch. Union, batting iirst, made 132,■M'Glll top-scoring with 43. It was a good innings, although chances were given towards the end. Supporters of Oriental entertained the hope tllnt they, would reach Union's total, but the fino bowling of Victor Harris (ably assisted by Burnes behind the stumps)' had ■ the batsmen thinking. The catch by M'Gill that disposed of Alpo was a very fine one. As matters stand, Oriental have lost nine wickets for 84. Irons, who went In first wicket down, is still in with 30 to his credit. .' . As indicated above, Rivals gave Artillery «. regular leather-hunt Kinvig gave one chance at -31; and another at 110; but the innings was a first-class one. Twelve of his hits went over the fence., His partner, Burke, g'avo n chance at 15, but otherwise played sound cricket.
