For the future a blue and white flag will ))o flown over the Central Fire Brigade station during the hours tho Municipal Market is open to the public. Tho Public.Works' Department has accepted the tendor of Messrs. Taylor Bros, and Moorchetid, of Christchurch, for tho erection of n power-house at Lake Coleridge, in connection with tho Government hydro-electrical scheme. The contract prico is Xls,(i;is. Tenders declined were those of: W. H. Winsor (,£10,823), 11. Green (.£10,913), Mills Kcpplo 1-621,001), and Wntsoii, • Rhodes, and sion, Duncdin (iC3I,9CG). The power-house, for which a contract has been let, will bu tho generating station in the Lake Coleridge scheme, and wilt transmit power to a subsidiary station at Addington.
A retreat of the Homnn Catholic priests of the archdiocese of Wellington is at present being held in St. Patrick's Collego. Priests are in attendance from districts as far removed from Wellington as Hawke's Bay and Tarnnaki.
' Tho Premier of Queensland (Mr. Denham) was the guest at a luncheon in Adelaide, arranged by the Commercial Club, on January 22, and in the course of an address ho made a strong appeal for the •development of patriotism in Australia. Ho said that Australia was a continent dominated ,by one flag that occupied a .position unique in tho history of the world. But near to her. were great nations who constituted a serious menace. China, with her 450,000,000 people, and Japan would ono day Want more elbow room, and assuredly they would be found knocking at Australia's doors unless Australia could firmly: answer "No," and that answer coiitfl only bo given by effective occupation and possession of empty spaces.
During the prese»i month Captain J. Maruo, an officer in the Japanese army, has been in the Maitland district (N.S.W.) buying-horses, and on January 22 the mail steamer Kuinano Maru, of the Nippon Xusen Knisha line, 101 l Sydney for Japan with. fifteen well-bred animals. They are consigned to Yokohama, und aro to ba used as chargers for officers in the army of tho Emperor.
Mr. 11. F. Allen, local,secretary for the Auckland Exhibition, has received a communication from Jlr. W. R. Holmes (secretary) stating that the executive of the Exhibition (to bo opened in December next) lias 'decided to offer prizes for the best displays in district courts, as was done at the New Zealand Exhibition. Tho first prize will bo .£IOO, the second JESO, and the third X 25, For the purpose of classifying what shall constitute a district; the executive suggest the following list:— South Auckland, North Auckland, Hawko's Bay, Taranaki, Wellington (including Manawatu and Wairarapa), Canterbury, Otago, 'Southland,. -Marlborough; Nelson, Westlnnd, and Cook Islands. Spaco for the district courts,is to bo charged at tho rate of 2s. per square foot. Mr. Allbii has been asked to use his best endeavours to get entries for the district court competition, and has already communicated with tho secretaries of tho Wairarapa and ' Manawatu Agricultural Societies in connection with the securing of- either individual or collective displays from those districts. Good progress has already been made with the erection of tho Exhibition Building, and already the two central tower 9, which are to flank the main entrance, may be seen topping the trees in the Domain.

, A conference in regard to the wages paid by the City Council to its general labourers is to be held on Friday -evening. The council has appointed the city Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) to represent it at tho conference, and tho General Labourers' Union will bo represented by Mr. M. J. Reardon (secretary) and other officers, Tho demand of the union is for a minimum of Is. 3d. an, hour (10s. a day), to be ptiid to permanent' and casual' labourers alike. At present permanent hands receive Bs. a day, and casuals is. ljd. an hour, of 9s. a. day. Tho Sydney "Sun's" Melbourne correspondent telegraphed last Thursday that the majority of the Federal members' letters to Sir. O'Mnlley favour Canberra as tho name for the Federal capital.
