SCOW & STORM. I BOTH MASTS SNAPPED OFF. THE CREW'S ORDEAL. -^ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, January 28. Tho storm, predicted by Sir. Bates and other weather prophets, made its Appearance ycistorday on Jlanukau Harbour with the forco of a cyclone, and resulted in tho wreck of the scow Reliance, owned by ,tho Onehunga Sawmillitig Company on Manukau Bar- yesterday afternoon. Captain Palmer and his crew had a most trying experience, being for two hours in an open boat on Manukau Bar, and, notwithstanding their united efforts, they could make no lieadway, but drifted steadily -. out to sea.

A sudden and terrific squall struck tho Reliance, snapping oft', both masts liko carrots, and tearing up tho deck low and aft. The masts fell right across the ship, and were held there by the rigging. All the ship's tools had been washed overboard, or the ship might have been saved, as a few blows of an axe would bayo freed everything and sent it overboard.

Tho main anchor was immediately dropped, but failed to-hold tho ship, and tho other anchor could not bo got out, as it was jammed by spars lying across it. The crew, however, got a _ kedgo anchor out, bent a hawser on to it, and put it over tho side, but even that did not hold, and tho vessel continued to drift on with the tide until she- got on to the north side of the Emma Bank.

Tho'.crew then' took to the boat, and, after two. hours,, and a narrow escape from disaster, were rescued by .tho steamer Olayimore. <.'-••• : • ■ ■ Tho scow subsequently worked her way across the Emma Bank into tho, south channel, finally going ashore under the lighthouse at tho south bead. at ,seven o'clock this, morning.-.:- ■■-~-'■• Thro 3 steamers left Onehunga yesterday, nanjcly,- tho Rarawa for, Nc\y Plymouth, Haupiri for New Plymouth and Wellington, and Claymore, for Raglan and Kawhia.
