MASTERTON NOTES.
-♦ — (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) , Masterton, January-27. Mr. Evelyn Wrench and Miss Wrench addressed a meeting under the auspices of tho Masterton .branch of the Overseas Club in the Exchange Hall this evening. The chair was occupied by the Mayor. Tho Bible-in-schools movement is-being actively supported by the churches of this town. A public meeting is to be held to-morrow night, when an address will be delivered by the Rev. G. A. Cook, of Wellington. . ' The Opaki Rifle Club held a sweepstake shoot on Saturday afternoon last, tho conditions being seven shots at 800 yards and ten shots at 900 yards. Rifleman W. D. M'Calmont was the top scorer with a register of 75 points. It is expected that from twenty-six to twenty-eight butchers will be employed at the Wainyawa works at tho end of the week. The new chambers at the works are now ready for use. It is expected that over 2000 sheep and lambs per dav will be put through for the renlainder of tho season. Up till date, about 60,000 sheep havo been slaughtered this season, which is fully 15,000 more than had been put through at the same period last year. Old settlers of Masterton aver that tho past season has been the best for' all round farming that has been experienced for the last thirty years. ' Tliero are at present twenty-nine patients in the Masterton Hospital, including thrco fever cases.
