WIRELESS IN THE PACIFIC.

, Tho proposal of the : French Government to erect a wireless station at Noumea is meeting with much favour fj-im the inhabitants of, New Caledonia. It is conEidorcd'that tho importance of a wireless system linking up tho Pacifio Islands cani.ot be too highly estimated, especially in view; of tho fact that tho Panama Canal is to be opened shortly. A station at Noumea would then have tho effect of uniting the stations in China, Africa, and • South America.
The wireless apparatus which is to be constructed will be of a, similar pattern to that at Saigon, and will play the same part in Oceania as tho former plays in tho bast. In the event of a break in tho existing cable between New Caledonia and Queensland, tho island will no longer be deprived of rapid communication with other countries.
In order to carry out a completo system of wireless, embracing all the French possessions in the world, another station will bo built at Tahiti. This latter will con. nect with the {station at Martinique, with (mother in tho Marquesas Islands as an intermediary. . The amount of tho expense' which Nonnlc bear'i? estimated
