Chrlstohurch,'January 27. A perious motor-ear accident occurred on the Little Rivor and Akoiroa Road, between,?*) pnd 11 o'clock this- morning. A car, containing Mr. Herbert" I'oaroo (a, well-known Christcliurch builder and a member of the Tramway Board), Mrs Pcarce and child, and Mr. and Mrs. G. Pengally.and two children, was aliout a mile from the hill-top when the engine suddenly stopped. The brakes failed to act, and the car ran I>ack and went over a bank. Fortunately the fall was broken by a clump of native shrubs. A party of grass-seeders witnessed the mishap, and went to tho assistance of the party. They extricated tho occupants, who were pinned under the car, and, with the help of some motor, cyclists, removed them to the Hill-top Hotel, where they wero attended to bv Dr. Cantrell, of Akaroa, who had been telephoned for. Mr. Pcarce is suffering from a fractured shoulder. Mr. Pengally has a fractured arm and n broken elbow.
