SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

SWIFTS' GALA AT TE TRO BATHS. BRICE WINS PROVINCIAL. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for tho fourteenth annual carnival of the Swifts' Amateur Swimming Club, held at the To Aro baths on Saturday afternoon. \ Unfortunately for the club, one or two counter attractions affected tho attendance. A noticeable and pleasing feature of the carnival- was tho' largo number of competitors in tho numerous events. Many predictions had been made as to who would win the 100 yds. provincial championship, and the majority of enthusiasts were freely stating that Stranger would be an easy winner. At the start of the race Stranger swam well, Lut lie soon tired, and although lie appeared to try hard ho could not catch flrice, who thoroughly deserved his win, and his chances of success at Wanganiii have considerably brightened. The various events of. the day were, got. off smoothly, with the result that all the events were decided without the slightest hitch. There was no "drag," and the spectators were not borea. Ono or two comic items were acceptable, and those present appeared to enjoy the carnival. • "Tiny" Freyberg, who has been doing very little competitive swimming in Wellington of late, and'who competed at 'Saturday's carnival, has challenged the win-, ner of the 100 yds. provincial championship (Brice), and is to challenge the winner of the 440 yds. test race to be held at ho baths this evening. If the challenges are accepted, the races will take place at the Te Aro baths on Wednesday evening. RESULTS. ■75 Yards Inter-club' Handicap—First heat: G. Bruco (13sec.), 1; G.
