Time, lmin. 15 l-ssec. • NOTES ON THE RACING. ; After two days of failure, backers made a little better success df selecting the winners;'.and in ; a big field in. the Wallaceville( Welter. Handicap the two candidates carrying most money ran first and second. ;'!'These :were Oxenhope and Dis-! tmction. i!. The former was - running well in the.Dduro Cup on Thursday *ylien he waS ,badly!, bumped, ; ! and ' it!' was on,,this form that-backers .made him favourite 1 on Saturday. He Won very easily lioin Distinction, but . the latter's performance was a very fine one, indeed, for the delay at tho post must again have serious mili-! fated against his chance' with such a big weight as he had to carry. ' Nukuatu's attractive performance in the January Welter Handicap ..on' Thursday>l!tfhHii' he br'olle lmifi. Usee'. f for' the mile,.resulted, in his .'being made ;a firm favourite for the Melrose Welter Handicap, ' while Rock Ferry and Peary were next in demandrV Backers : had again summed up the position correctly, as tho three canuidates named finished-in the ot'dcr in which they, were backed." The 1 winner again registered very fast time for the distance!'
, A new, rdcord for Trentham was established when, Peronilla Von the. Hopeful Stakes, and covered the four furlongs in 47 i-ssec. The Achilles filly was favourite, , but Tatterley,. Briar: Patch, and The Hague .wore all solidly backed. " The event was spoiled somewhat by. a , poor start, Peronilla and Tatterley getting all ,'the best of it. Peronilla never gave any- - thing elsrfa chknce, .and finished' full of running.. The other - horses- finished in the order in which, they appeared on the card. : h ~'' : : ,i
'.Imagination, who.had- been solidly supported'in doubles as ;the first leg of the, . Summer Handicap and.. City, Handicap, . combination, was withdrawn from the mile/ and, reserved for the . Consolation Handicap;'. '.The only ; other withdrawal, was-Vibration.'. Of the dozen runners, Obligant and Culprit" carried the bulk of 'the money,'but backers on .this, occasion ".were wjde| of the mark; for* neither of. thepair'paid a dividend. • Both, however, were prominent at .the home turn, and Culprit', jvas. only, beaten on the post for second money. ' The winner; Seatondale,' 'though he. had won the Marton Cup ear'lier in the month,' was one of the outsiders of',the field, while Coroniform, who, had shown capital'form on ; the first two days of .the meeting, was' not ''as heavily backed aa' might ; have. been _ expected. Ho was ono of ,the most consistent performers at the meeting,, winning one race .ahdiactiflg.as runner'up, in his, other two starts. Sea Queen must have been hard ,to beat on Saturday but'for a bad start. 'She'was on# of the last to leave the mark, ■ and, after having to pass. on. the outside of a'number of, candidates in. making up ■her: ground,- she finished .close up'fourth. ••. Medallist .was-made a better ,favourite than", Full Rate, in the Selling Plate, while Crosbio was also well backed.. , The lastnamed, appeared to have the race won until, a few yards from the post,. when ■Medallist,; who secured a fortunate run 'on'th'e rails', headed him, and won by a long neck. Full Eate did not get away .too, well, but he caught his fieid early, and'then failed to stay on to the end of, the'journey. . Crosbie was winning so . easily when he passed. the .main stand that many of those'viewing the race from there declined to believe that he had been defeated. As Medallist finished right on the rails and Crosbio well out, it would be difficult to .-she other hand; to those in the members' stand, it appeared that Medallist had won by a good:'halflength. However, when the numbers were hoisted, a section of.the crowd treated the judgo to'a hostile , demonstration. [This was continued when Mr. Hartgill 'took the' numbers down to alter .third place, which had been as No. 1 .(a. non-starter), instead of No. 2, Later, l/ivhen- Medallist was submitted to auction.' there were cries' of "Put Up the winner!' But gradually tho feeling; subsided. ' Thero were eleven runners in the Kaitoke Handicap, for which Exertion was made favourite. The Birkenhead_ gelding Von'very comfortably at , the finish,_ but had Evadne been ridden with better judgment she .would probably have troubled tho winner, The King's Guest filly hopped out ■ of the. barrier smartly, and then after falling bnck towards the rear of the field she finished faster than anything in the Tace, and just got up. in time to gain second monoy. Exertion's failure on the first day would probably have resulted in:hi9.)»ing:negleoted on Wednesday but for a-rumour-which had spread about tho course to the effect that he had galloped one of tho best half-miles ever seen at .Trentham.. ■ Sinapis; Undecided, and Imagination all carried over JEIOOO in:the.Consolation Handicap,.but the money .invested on them only helped to syrell tho dividends on Masterpiece and Mira.who gaiped .the first and second places. Sinapis, who waa ithe. actual favourite, evidently put for- ■ ward her very best effort, for after, running, prominently up to a . mile she dropped back badly . beaten. Undecidal was again too much on tho big side,- and may bo better in another month. Imagination was apparently, beaten- by the distance,'but, bred aa she is on the dam's side, will no doubt stay well in time. Masterpiece, who-ran very badly in the .Wellington Cut> on Wednesday, was in more of'ft galloping mood on Saturday, and dashing to the front five furlongs from home ho ((radually increased his lead and won handsomely at the finish. The tnajoritv of tho horse* who finished in front'of Masterpiece in tho Cup werq
not opposed to liim in tho Consolation, but nevertheless a section of tho crowd expressed displeasure at tho victory'of the Clanranald horse, and there was a demonstration against his rider as lie roub hack to the enclosure. Soino of those round i tho birdcage called' for the stipendiary stewards, but nothing further followed from the incident. . - • . Gladiole was a slightly better fatounto than Heatherbrae in-the City Handicap, on Vhich tliero wero hefivy investments. Gladiolo won easily, but Hcatherbrae, who drew a bad position, failed ttf hnisn among tho first 'half-dozen. Soldiers Chorus had his chanco spoiled i fioiti&what by a poor start. He finished with a great run.up the straight, and just gained second placo from Ermengarde, Tyho is racing with no.,luck at tho present time. WINNING 1 OWNERS.
