"TRIUMPH" ESTABLISHES CHRIST-

CHUR.CH-KAIKOURA RECORD. The motor oycling record from Christ church to Kaikoura and baok, which was established on Thursday by Mr. G. B. Brown on a latest model "Triumph," and •which constitutes one of the finest crosscountry porformanocs ever put up by a motor cyolist in New Zealand, has a somewhat curious history. Some three months ago Mr. Brown challenged all and sundry to a straight-out hill-climbing contest, on Sumner Hill or Paokakarikl Hill—the "Triumph" against any pther inaoliine. Thero were no aoocpta'nces, but one firm said in effeot: "Wo know the Triumph can Hole our maohino on tho hills proposed, but come out; on a Jong run aoross really bad country—Christchurch to Kaikoura and baok, for instance—and wo'll sho.w you a point or two." Well, of oourse, we didn't refuse that proposition. But wo thought it fair {o give thorn all a chanco, and challenged any motor cyclist in Now Zealand, not riding a "Triumph," to meet G. B, Brown and his rriumph" on that very conrso. There were ten thousand excuses, but wo couldn't got ono match. So, baulked „in our good intentions, wo docided to' establish a rcoord ovor tho course, ond let the other' fellows, havo a pcok at it at thoir'lelsure. You all know 1 what happened. Mr. Brown oovered tho jf,o milos of rough country, half of it on an unknown road, in under 12 hours. Tho rivers and river-beds vrero.diffioult to negotinto, but tho "Triumph" stood tho racket in tho regular "Triumph" way, «n<l there was ndt « break-down, not oven a puncture, to mar the record. Not know, ing the road, Mi - . Brown made a ' few deviations and detours he would not otherwise havo had to make. So if anyone lowers tho present rccord of 11 hours SGJ minutes, he vtill bo prepared to go. out again, nnd knock' o littlo mora olf .(lie timo. New' stock of Triumphs just arrived: Fixed engine, .£7O; free engine, XBO; threo speed, <£87 10s, Adams, Ltd., Christchurch. Branches at Palmcrston North and Wanganui; agents, Suthorland and Rankine, Wellington; Tourist Motor Co., Hastings.
