THE BUSINESS GIRL.
HIGH MARRIAGE RATE-AND WHY, (By TelogTaph.—Spoolal Correspondent.) .. Auckland, January 25. The value. of a busmen training for girls cannot«be too higftly estimated.' Xfiis i» the opinion at an Auckland women who every yeari trains large num-. hers of girls for onicp,\vork.* it is my firm belief that every girl on leaving school should have a couple. of years' ex-> perience in an, ofiico," cphtinucd tlie speaker. "There may be dozens of New Zealand girls for'whom the necessity, ot; earning tneir own iiying may nover arise, and wno marry (pnd marry Svcll) 1 when, tney are qutfo young, but eyen with a woman who 'pluses 'an early marriage it will, do Ker no harm to havo 6oino acquaintance'with, business methods. On the contrary it will nearly always do her a great ampunt of good, for a bullies? experience often givej a young woman an astonishing, insignt into human nature 'tlidt |cflMibf 3 tAil'to,'bo'- bf „beiifefit to: her later'oh, ! 'no"»atter"whit' career' she may ultimately choose. I consider tfte aYeragq Working girl of 'to-day is a splendid specimen of. womanhood,, and out of all trades and professions I would select the girl who. works in'a oity olhco'as being tho most' spifrreliant, shrewd, and sellpossessed. Certainly . the , modern cry o} neglected domestic affairs' is continually raised against her, but many of tho penpie who so deplore the fact that the tendency of the modern girl is to 6eck outBide rather than home interests would bo surprised to leam that tho business girl is usually quite as domesticated us her home-staying 6ister. When the ■ need arises she can take her place in the house, and will take to cookery and house-work with as much avidity as;she takes' to adding figures and clicking a typewriter. My experience has been that even tho very young girls, of whom there dro now so many, in offices are for the most part tlever cooks) and make all their own dresses as well. I have never found-that a business training interferes to apy marked extent with the domesticity of the modern woman. Men seem to;realise the good qualities of -the business girl, for it is a fact that the marriogo rate amongst women in offices, is much higher than amongst women in>ny other walk of life. The percentage of happy marriages is likewise greater, Qwing, I think, chiefly to two things. Firstly, that tho business woman, coming as she docs into daily contact with a largo number of men ,is better able to judge what kind of man is likely to make her happy, and, secondly, that her business experience lia's taught her something of tho seamy side of life, and she is'able to bear, with a cheerful optto. those little reverse's, that are unfortunately so common i in. married life." „
