BRITAIN'S ARMY.
LAUGHING STOCK OF WORLD
LORD ROBERTS DISGUSTED.
By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (Rec. January 24, 0.5 a.m.)
London, January 23. The National Service League presented Lord Roberts with .£SOOO on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Lord Roberts will devote the gift to the League's work.
Lord Eoberts, in acknowledging the gift, said civilians and soldiers had done their utmost to make Lord Haldane's scheme a success, but time, money, and energy had been utterly wasted. Britain had no army, and her military arrangements made the laughing-stock of the civilised world. Those who looked, to Britain to help, to keep the balance of power in Europe had become disgusted.
