DAMAGE RUNS INTO THOUSANDS.

Cambridge, January 21. , A "destructive-fire broke out last night in the block of buildings immediately adjoining tho site' of tho National Hotel, which was destroyed by fire last month. On the occasion of the hotel lire an extensive stable owned by Crbwther and Bell miraculously escaped destruction, although swept by the flames from tho burning hotel. Last night, however, the stables wero completly demolished. . jTlio fire broke out in'a painter's and house decorator's', shop, occupied by F. J. Fitzgerald, and rapidly spread to tho stables on one side, and, F. J. Mnrfcll's motor garage on the other side, and the whole block was soon burning fiercely. All the buildings were Wiped out, and an adjoining-.temporary, bar. of tho National Hotel, erected since tho hotel fire, was also'entirely destroyed.All the horses and , vehicles were rescued from the stables, and ;six motorcars were safely taken out of the motorgarage. Four other motor-cars belonging to private owners, however, were .destroyed by the flames. The stock of wines and spirits from the hotel bar was saved. The ruins are still smouldering this morning. : ■ ' _ The supply Df water proved quite inadequate to deal with ithe conflagration, and the Borough Council will again be urged to institute a water supply system suitablo for. fire-fighting purposes. .
