Sydney, January 21. ■ A scheme for dealing with casual drunkards, which has been operating for many years in, America and five years in Victoria, has been introduced at" the Central Police Court; The Rev/ Mr. Hammond and al missioner converse with likely' men in the courtyard, informing them that if,they,will.sign a pledgo undertaking .not to take liquor for a period of not less than six months, the magistrate will b9 informed, -and will probably not con : vict them. The signatories are visited in their own -homes the same week, and a letter of encouragement is sent. The experience in 'Victoria shows that twentyfive per, cent, sign, and of these eighty per cent, keep the pledge or aro not heard of again.. ".-'-,.
