TBAVELLING SECRETARY TO BE - APPOJNTKD.

. At tlia Dominion Conference of delegates 'of the Now Zealand branches on tho Church of . England Men's Societv held, in Jselson last week, the committee sot up to consider the question of tho appointment.of: a- travelling secretary reported ;as follows That a general and organising secretary bo . appointed for a .term of two-years, .at a salary of .£3OO per annum with travelling expenses; a committee to bo appointed to select a ■man from .England; tho committee to. consist of tho .Archbishop of York, and tho" Revs. W. S. Woolcombe and J. E. Watts-Ditchfield. In moving the adoption of the report, ?[ r - W--Henderson (Wellington) expressed tho opinion that tho amount of travelling expenses-should be fixed at .£IOO per annum. Canon Ruddock said: that per annum would not-bo sufficient for a man to -travel from. ono end of the Dominion to the other. Tho Rev. J. D. Russell said that the committee had Considered the question of travelling expenses, and reckoned that the travelling secretary would Teceive hospitality at tho various places ho visited, and the amount would prove sufficient. The Rev. P. T. Williams; said that the committee had not recommended whether the man to be appointed should be in priesfs orders'or not. It was explained that tho committee were of opimoi; tlrat tho man should be in priest's orderSj although it was also thought that this should-bo a matter for the selection committee. The Rev. P. T. Williams moved that the words, "in priest's orders," be inserted after the words "travelling secretary." .Mr., J. W. Henderson (Wellington) seconded' the amendment.- ■ ■" ' Bishop Averill (Waiapu) thought this matter should be left to the selection committee. ; Tho amendment Tvas put and lost. - A further; amendment that "holy, orders, were preferred",: was also defeated. . On'the motion of .Mr.'; Wilson (Auckland) the words "from; England" were omitted. Mr. R. 6. Houso (Lower Hutt) did not see why a su'table man could not be selected in New Zealand.

The clause amended was then passed, and tho adopted.
