Haymaking in this district is'still in full swing, and; many of tho crops aTO record" ones. An.inquest was held on Friday into the .circumstances surrounding - the death •. of Wiremu Gardiner, tho 18 months did child of Mr. D. Gardiner, who was drowned in the Waikawa River on Monday last. Evidence was given by the mother of tho ,child, and a lad-named Naera, with whom the child had priviously been playing. •It was stated that the child had wandered from ' home to ' the river, where the body -was found in shallow water. Tho Coroner (Mr. Nation) returned a verdict of accidentally drowned.. Stray stock'are at present a nuisance here, and gardens, ctc., are being damaged.to some extent. .Hedges, roads, and .footpaths-also', suffer." i ~ . : ;'■ Since the new town-board took office •it./has endeavoured''to i secure a : vacant site (owned by tha Justice Department) -for, the-.purposo; of building, offices.
