THE W. A. A. C. SPORTS.

——« M'HOLM & HAMMER. RECORD EASILY LOWERED. ~~ j Quite a successful sports meeting was hold on tho Basin Reserve 011 Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of tho Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. There were good fields ill all the track events, but poor entries for the field events. The runners were all ill excellent. trim, but tho wind marred the sprint races more or less,, and tho times recorded in these events were all slow. Tho best performances were D. Dinnie's run in tho halfmile, from' 15 yards, in 2min. 3 4-ssec., and in tho mile with Byrne, at tho rato of about four forty for the whole journey.' The greatest happening of the doy was the breaking of tho Australasian hammerthrowing record by A. M'Holm. The record has 6tood for some years at 132 ft. 2in., but li' Holm threw 138 ft. He proved conclusively enough that even this by no means represented his true form, for he subsequently threw the &ame. hammer 145 ft. 6in. Unfortunately this latter throw cairn 01 go on to the records, because it was not made- in competition. M'Holm is one of those athletes who can always perform better in private than in public, and lie may never register such a fine throw' at a sports meeting again.
