Herbert Wallaco and Thomas William Adams .were oharged in'the Magistrate's Court on Saturday with having on January.B, at Auckland, assaulted Georgo Anderson, and robbed him of about .£2 in money, a watch and chain (worth £3), anil bank slips on the Bank of Now Zealand, for J2ifß. '. ■ ■ - : Chief-Detective Broberg said that the acouscd were arrested on Friday by Detectives Mason and'Dempsey and Constable Forsyth as a result of inquiries made by Detective Mason. Tho accused were seafaring men. Ho wished to make further inquiries, and asked for a remand till tomorrow. " Tho request for tho remand was granted. ."WELL-KNOWN PETTY THIEF." George Hastings was accused of tho theft of a carving knife, valued at 3s. Gd., belonging to Sing Kee. He pleaded guilty, and Sub-Inspector Sheohan described him-as awoll-known: petty: thief, who could hardly resist tho temptation to steal. Hastings asked for a chance, saying that he; had been in-ill-health; and Dr. M'Arthur said he would sivo him '■ a chance to recover—fourteen 1 , days in 'gaol. • OTHER CASES. William Newman was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for haying stolen a case of fruit worth 3s. frdm' tho. cart, of Joseph Angus. . For insobriety, Robert Knox was fined ios.
