COLLEGE FOR LADY MISSIONARIES.
NEW INSTITUTION OPENED AT BIKMINGHAM. Carey Hall, an important. addition to the institutions for tuo training of lady missionaries of tho Presbyterian; Baptist, Congregational, nnd other Free Churches, was opened on November 28 at Woodbrooke, Birmingham. ~ .'. '", AVoodbrooko has become the centre of 6uch religious and educational agencies as Kingsmead, specially for training missionaries belonging to tho Society of Friends; West Hill, for training Sunday school leaders; and Fircroft, ■ a college where working men are trained. Tho hall has been presented by Miss Kemp, the sister of Sir George Kemp, Manchester. • ..: '"
At tho opening, ceremony, performed by Sir George Macalpiiib, Mr. George Cadbury, who presided, said that such institutions werei' doubly,, blessed. "They ' tend," ho''said,' "to united',effort abroad, ■' and, therefore; indirectly'to united effort at home. •. They emphasise: tho fact, that the points : upon which real Christians differ aro very smalLcompared with, the essential points' upon ;which;tlioy agree— 'in essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things,:charity.':.The controversial bitterness of thrco hundred years ago shows, how' few.' Christians then woro Christ's badge—'By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if yo have love ono to another.' Tho controversialists had the idea that ono group held all the truth, consequently high walls were built round each group. Fellowship in servico tends to break these walls down. May this college help to prepare for this Christian fellowship in heathen lands; may. it also- hasten tho day when women aro recognised as men's equals iu religious and in social ■ work. Tho women in tho Salvation Army, in rescuing tho drunkard and tho profligate,. havo certainly done quite as much, if not more than'the. men.;. Though' working on harmoniously with thoso belonging to other denominations,' thero is.no reason that wo should bo. any tho :icss loyal, to' our'own,' but wo want tho ideal of every church to be that it should become a mission church, ; and overy member of it' a missionary. May tho united efforts of Christians be increasingly • ; concontratcd on bringing tkoso who aro afar off nigh, going into the wilderness 'tir.secS' and to save that which wa9 lost,' thus hastening tho time when our Lord's prayer will bo answered'that 'they all may,be ono'— ono in heart" and one in effort to hasten the coming of the kingdom, showing forth to the world 'the height and depth and length and breadth of tho love of Christ, which passes knowledge.'" Sir Georgo Macalpine spoke of the peculiarly happy surroundings in which tho hostel was set, and tho possibilities of association it enjoyed with tho organised religious and social work of tho Friends atWoodbrooke and Kingsmead. In this connection he referred to tho inestimable tfontributions to, learning mado by Dr. Hendel Harris, "Wo have como at' a critical moment," Sir George proceeded. "We have, como nt a moment when the opportunities of service in tho foreign field aro expanding by leaps and bounds. Dr. Wardlaw Thompson, tho secretary of the London Missionary.Society, declared tho hostel to bo a sign' of the times. "For tbo mission field," ho remarked, "tho vory highest training and the most'thorough preparation is essential if wo are to meet our difficulties and perform the duties required of us. On behalf of tho Presbyterian Church in Engl'and, tho Rev. Alex. Council brought a message of encouragement, and similar cordial expressions were extended by tho Ifcv. Sidney M. Berry (Can- s Lane) and tho ltev. Tissingtou Tatlow, presidentof tho Student, Christian movement. ••■'• • ; ... , ■
