During the quarter ended December -31 Mr. E. A, W. Osborne, the . local registrar, reported thero had been 22 births and two deaths in the district. ; Mr. T. C. Dunckley, who was. some ■ years ago in business'in Shannon, has '■ sold -his business at Morrinsville, and is likely to go on a trip to the' Old Country. He will bo accompanied by Mrs. Dunckley and family. Shannon cricketers defeated Levin on Saturday by i runs. Tho first "shoot" for the cup presented by Mr. W. H. Gunning took place, en Saturday oil the rifle range, over 3flo, 500, and GOO yards, with , the following results:—Rifleman E. W, Sutton (scr.), 90; J. Hallam (3),'87;'8. Spencer '; (3), 87; Hinchcliffe (15), 86; Woodmass (10), 82; Captain G. N._ Stephenson (3), 81; H. Sutton (7), 71. A contract lias been let for bush-felling and road-forming on Seifert's bush, lately , the property of tho Shannon Sawmilling ; Company. Later on tho property is likely to be cut up into grazing areas. . . Recently Mr. E. P. Levien purchased flax land consisting of 585 .acres from the Makerua "Estate Company, tho'price,' it is reported, being .£25 per acre. Mr. Levien has now sold tho property , to Messrs. Gibbs and Speirs, Foxton. The leaf will not now be milled in Shannon, but will be punted to Foxton and* stripped at, the.mill purchased by Messrs. Gibbs and Speirs from the' Hemp Process and • By-products Company. At Saturday's meeting of the Horowhe; nua County Council, the chairman (Mr'. G. N. Stephenson) reported. that ho had given the Shannon Sawmilling Company two months' notice to remove their tramway on tho Tokomaru' Valley Road. Thomas King was appointed poundkeeper at a weekly wage of 55., and Mr. ' C. Wilson was appointed dog-tax collector for the Tokomaru Riding. It jvas resolved that Mr. G. N. Wood be offered .£3 in full settlement for calves lost, at. Shannon pound, without prejudice. With reference to the Makerua Swamp Road, Councillor Venn stated that he had waited upon the Makerua Drainage Board, which, however, had declined te have anything to do. with the .upkeep of the •drain. The drain was a mile and a quar- • tor long, nnd it would cost .£lO-or Hl2 a year to keep clean. Jfr. R. M'Nab would not construct tho road unless it was kept ■ away from the drain. . Councillor'"Venn • advised the council not to give way in the matter.
