■ Frances .Wood (1G) and Helen Mary Easton (12)., daughter's of tradespeople, were bathing oh Warrnambonr'beach on January 4.with other girls. The sea was very rough, and they did not venture into moro than 2ft.' or' 3ft. of water, owing to the strong backwash, i After the girls had been bathing for twenty minutes, a huge wave—described by eye-witnesses-ns an '-immense wall of-water-^cumo■ rushing in shorcwards, and caught, the girls'bnforo thev were awaro nf its anproach. Two-of the-girls wero thrown down, but managed to escape, the undertow, but Misses Fasl'm and Wood were carried out of their depth. • Assistance- was obtained, but. nobody. cou ' ? ' witliin twenty yards'of the girls. Another wave threw them back into comparatively shallow water. One' of the' girls was rescued, the- other;'was, swept out again. ■Ultimately tho rescuers got the lxidv, but offo'rls to'restoreaniinatiori were fruitless, -, ■-.'.' •MU«.
