CALL OF THE RESERVES.

HOW TO ASSIST.

CARNIVAL PEOPLE'S PROJECTS.

A meeting of tho General Committee of the Citizens' Sports Carnival to improve the resorves was held in the Council Chamber last evening, Mr. Geo. Frost, preThe secretary was instructed Ho make immediate application to tho Minister for Internal Affairs for permission to hold an art union at the carnival. , Tho chairman stated that tho following had been suggested lis the prizes for tho art union:—First, gold nugget valued at .£SO, equivalent to a trip from Wellington to Sydney, via Auckland, Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, or vice versa; second gold nugget valued at .£2O, equivalent to a trip from Wellington to Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, via Bluff; third, gold nugget valued at .£ls equivalent to a tjip from Wellington to Sydney; fourth, a tramway pass-over the Wellington trams for 12 months.

Several of those present objected to the value of tho proposed prizes, two speakers expressing the opinion that the Minister would never grant permission for an art union for prizes as mentioned. Messrs. C. G. Wilson and M. Luckie both stated that similar prizes had been given in art unions before and no Court proceedings had resulted. The Hon. A. L. Herdman suggested that a sub-committee be appointed and authorised to ■ make arrangements for an art union, and that tho prize money be limited to .£125, He considered that the subcommittee should be required to make arrangements that would coincide with the law,-as ho understood that some peoplo in Christchurch were. being proceeded against for conducting an art union. The suggestions were put to the meeting in tho form of a motion, which was carried unanimously. ...

Mr. L. Watkins stated that he had received numerous promises of assistance from citizens, for the carnival. The cadet people, he said, who proposed holding a tournament during Easter time, would be pleased to convert their function' into items for tho carnival, and tho prizes which it was proposed to givo in this connection would still be available for ■the cadets. The speaker concluded by stating that the committee could be assured of success from the general public. From what he had gathered they were very .enthusiastic over the carnival. . Sub-committees were appointed to control the following divisions of the carnival: (1) Art union; (2) physical drill for I cadets; (3) dances and exercises for children; (i) Highland dancing, grand march, and tableaux; (5) decorated motor-cars, cycles, and motor-cycles; (6) stalls, toys,/ fruit, confectionery, post-cards, tobaccb, and refreshments; (7) shooting .jallery, "Aunt Sally," etc.; (8) sports; (9) grounds; (10) finance; (11) concert entertainment; (12) programmes and advertising. . Mr.. Collins, (city treasurer) was appointed treasurer for the carnival. , The question as to how long the carnival should extend, was left in the hands of the' executive committee. , It ,was suggested that a special me«ting be called for ladies, who are interested in the movement. It was :■ daemed. advisable to await the .arrival of the Mayoress, before calling such a meeting. ~.''.'■ It was moved by Mr. J.yP. Firth, and seconded by Mr. T. Shields that subscriptions lists bo opened. The motion was carried: unanimously.

Now. that the sub-committees have been appointed, the work of arranging the programme for the'earnival is to be immediately taken up.
