A grant 'of JC7 was made. * Major Bevau w.rote thanking the council for its donation, of JEIO towards the Navals'.'cutters. A deputation representing the Welling'ton Rugby. Union waited upon the council regarding the Petone recreation grounds for the coining season. Mr. E. O. Hales headed the' deputation, He stated that, on behalf of his union, ho Came to ask tho council whether they would allow the union to use the recreation grounds on terms similar to those of previous years. Ho regretted that he was not in a. position to offer, a cash rental for the grounds, but he was prepared to enter into any agreement by which the council should take a share of the proceeds of the"gate." : His union were quite prepared to renew the agreement of last season. The Petoue'Club, Mr. Hales pointed out. were an' asset to the Wellington Rugby Union, and,. if tho union .did not have Me use of tho Petono 'grounds, the Petone Club would' cease to exist. The relations between the- council and the union had been cordial in the past, and he hoped that an agreement by which the union was allowed tho use of the three grounds would be arrived at. Mr. Hardhnm also spoko on behalf of the deputation, and emphasised the fact that the Petone Football Club had been in existence for 25 and that 'they wero affiliated to tho -Rugby Union.,. Last year, there were 110 players engaged at Petone on one Saturday. The Petone . Club, through the Wellington Rugby Union, required the grounds, and in doing so w ; ero fostering good, clean sport. He hoped that. the council would help tho Petone Club and allow them to take their sport at home. It.was decided that the matter be referred • to the Recreation Grounds Committee to be more fully discussed. v Tho committee would also (in relation to the Wellington Rugby Union's application) discuss a letter from the Northern Union tendering for the samo grounds. ■ The League were prepared to make a cash 1 offer.- It was also decided to writo to the various other football clubs asking them if they wished to tend for any of the grounds; also that the grounds north of tho stopbank be put in order. As regards the raising of the clock tower the engineer reported as follows:— To effect this, considerable structural 1 alterations would be necessary. The pre--1 sent tower is framed principally on the roof, although the base rests .on two brick walls. To raisei' tho tower it' would bo necessary to provide good anchor bolts, firmly bedded in the brickwork, at sufficient depth to resist the lateral pressures from the wind, and this would mean taking down the walls to the level-of tho first floor. Probably tho best means would be, instead of raising the present structure, to take it down altogether, using any of tho material that might bo suitable for the new tower. To merely raise tho present one, say, 10 feet, would moan destroying the architectural proportions, and would not. have a good effect, and again from tho narrowness of the present structure tho difficulty of providing sufficient stays to guard against thewind pressure would have to bo overcome. The cost of either scheme could not be much lew than .CiliO. For Children's Hacking Cough at Night, Woods' Groat Peppermint Cure A Jjs, Od/
