Rhodes stated that the Auckland City Exchango now operated 3811 connections,' 1149 extensions, and 90 bureaux, a total of 5055 telephones. There aro now 38 exchanges in Auckland district, and worked by thcin are 5801 connections, 1297 extensions, and 538 bureaux, i total of 7740 telephones' in use. The increase in four years is equivalent to nearly 90 per cent.. The Minister again referred to tho installation of tho automatic systems. Ho ■remarked that simultaneously with tho work of installing the aow telophono system, arrangements wil be made for placiug lead cables underground as far aB possible. ' There arc toe many cables, strung overhead.
