"Tho Emerald Necklace," described as a thrilling dramatic sensation, will bo tho leading attraction of the new. programme of the Empress Theatre continuous pictures to-day and to-night. There havo been many film's in which .detoctivo has been pitted against thief, but a noiv departure in this production is a contest between thief and thief. Both belong to the swell typo of criminal. They are bitter rivals in an endeavour to steal a costly emerald necklace from a famous actress. They attend a. ball at which the' actress is present,' and thon commences an exciting contest of wits .between the two men. The/episodes follow in quick succession. "Tho Emerald Neckloco" will bo- supported, by a programme which will include subjeots of exceptional merit. THE PEOPLE'S PICTURE PALACE. Tho management of the People's Picture Palace announce an exceptionally good programmo for to-day. The leading "star" item is entitled "Neptune's Daughter," a . film by tho famous Essariay Company. Other films which go to make a very fine . programme are: "A Mountaineer's Romance," "Alkali lko's Pants,'- an amusing American comedy, and a number of other Ecenic, topical, and comio pictures. WIRTH'S CIRCUS: OPENS TO-NIGHT. Wirth's Circus, whiph opens to-night near Te Aro Railway Station, has been so much added to and modernised ■in .recent years 'th'at' 'this' present-day combination, of four distinct shows in ono bears but slight resemblance to tho circus of a quarter-of a century ago. • The'graceful .equestrian- acts land the charms, of old are retained, but the craze for something new has long since. boon answered- by the enterprising _ brothers who control the show, and is still being answered year in and,year out. This season the programme contains a "star" in Hillary Long, who does "everything on his head. This "up-side-down phenomenon," as he is termed, does his "business" without the aid of his hands or feet, his head being the only essontial necessary for him to walk ■about'on. Ho balancos on his head on a trapezo bar high in the air, while 'he smokes a cigarette and juggles a number of .balls, and also pours out a'glass of liquor which he drinks "up." Then the trapeze is set swinging and revolving, and again, on his lead,- he maintains a perfect balance. His concluding feat, however, is even more sensational. This is the "slide 'for life" on-his head-down a 90ft. wire. The'Nino Bastions aro one of tho cleverest troupes of acrobats who have visited this country. All of ono family, they range from Bastion Pero to a tiny tot of four years, and every on is a specialist in' the art of somersaulting, while Mdlle. Bapista, a wonderfully strong girl, also supports all her brothers and sisters on her slioulders. Thoro aro over a score of items on the circus programmo, and then come the cowboys, led by Art Bodeli: 'This party has-in its ranks the horses of the great "round-up" that" are held annually in the United States, including Captain Rose, (of biograpli fame), Ga6pipo Mullison,,George Miller, Guy Updike, and Charlie La Due. These men give a com-plete-show in themselves.-Thore is also a party of Australian rough-riders, and the menagerie, making a total of four comnlete shows in one, which will appear in Wellington to-night, near To Aro Railway station, for a short season only. Matinees will be held on Wednesday and Saturday. The box plan is now open at the' Dresden.' ' Tho circus arrived in Wellington last night, and at an early hour this morning tho intricate heterogeneous gear was all on tho ground near Te Aro Railway Station. Tho season will bo opened this evening. ; "THE FOLLIES." Tho Wellington music-loving and playgfting public' havo been - made quite familiar with tho Pierrot class of entertainment by tho visits of the English Pierrots, tho Red and Green Dandies and the Scarlet Troubadours, and now there is a similar combination about to make its bow to Wellington audiences. Tho new company is styled "Tho Follies." The company lias been playing in north,ern towns,, and tho Wellington season open 9 in the Opera House next Saturday evening! but is limited to six nights, a 9 a comprehensive tour of the South Island has been booked. Tho company includes Xiss Cissy O'Keefe, ■ a gifted- oontralto; Miss Lily Moore, male impersonator; Lulu and Lily Lusanne, singers and dancorsj Black and Edgar, the Virginian, Duo; Clifford O'Keefe, basso; George Branson, baritone; Percy Dalton, singing and dancing qomedian; Percy Clifton, character comedian (late of "The Arcadians"); H. C. Steyne, light comedian; and William Butler, pianist. A feature is mado of tho concerted singing, and musical scenes and sketches, and unique, stage settings. Particulars of the box plan arrangements aro advertised in this issue. CITIZENS' EASTER CARNIVAL. Tho first meeting of tho General Committeo of tho Citizens' Easter Carnival will'take placo this evening at 8 o'clock in tho Town Hall. Citizens who take an interest in any hobby that would make an interesting side-show at tho carnivnl, would 1)0 helping the committee, and incidentally the city reserves, if they would send their suggestions to Mr. James Bean, City Council officer, the secretary of the carnival, previous to tho meeting.
