WELL DONE, CASSELLS.

Sir,—No wonder the Wellington- papers are taking exception to Mr. W. G. EldJeils (S.M,) regarks in the recent prosecution of a bookmaker. It seems to me about time both Judges, of the Supreme Court (there,is at least, one, and sometimes two), and. magistrates refrained frojn .making -.remarks about- the action sf the. police in endeavouring' to secure conviction against wrong-doers. , If the law is as stated by Mr. Eiddell, then [, can, only repeat,. as ' was done by a certain Historical individual,' 'that , "the law is a hassr"—and 'the sooner the asinine law is altered the better—but even if tho law is wrong; or the police are > wrong in carrying it out. I contend it is not in the province of the Judge or. magistrate to publicly call attention to it, and slate some poor constable br. detective for doing what, superiors consider is right. Their 3bvious,duty is to write to the Minister For Jrtstice, and eee proper instructions we given .by him to . the Police Department. In , the present instance,- if I were rhe' Commissioner of Policeorinspectorfor Wellington; I would politely suggest to Mr. Eiddell to rnihd his 'own business, tf Mr. Eiddell's. dictum was given effect to, what chance would the police have }f ridding the public streets of tho bookmaker and "toto" bettors? and what was none in that respect bv the police till Detective-Sergeant Cassells took tho matter in hand and -woke up some of the parasites who hanxr. about our streets, Mocking- the footpaths and roadways, and being a decided nuisance generally? I) is small encouragement to Mr. Cnssella arid. the small band of conscientious oolicemen who are working with him tc have remarks'addressed to them such'as were recently addressed bv Mr. Eiddell [ was wondering if Mr. Mvere. who at> peared for the acoused, would have beer so shocked if similar evidence had" beer tendered by the Police when he condnctoc :nso3 as Acting-Crown Prosccutor.—l am etc., . , - _ EIDDLE No. 2. January 11, 1913.
